ESPN Great Outdoor Games

It comes with great regret and sadness to inform you ESPN's Great Outdoor Games will no longer be continued. In a letter to all athletes on 21 August, 2006,

Dear Athletes:

As you may be aware, ESPN Outdoors is shifting its focus and will now be concentrating its energies and resources on BASS and the Saturday Outdoors programming block. In evaluating current and future programming opportunities, ESPN has made the difficult decision that the Great Outdoor Games will not return.

With your partnership and support, the ESPN Great Outdoor Games set a new standard for outdoor sports competition. The event was successful on many fronts, generating strong ratings, passionate crowds, two Sports Emmy awards and other honors and we wish to thank all who contributed to those successes. We hope you will continue to support ESPN Outdoors as we begin a new chapter in its development.

We would like to thank ESPN for their support during the 6 years of the Great Outdoor Games. We all had a feeling it would come to an end sooner or later, but are still very sad to see it go all the same.

Lumberjack Water Sports Today

A number of individuals are pushing for Professional Rollers to switch to carpeted logs in competition. They have stated one such reason as financial concerns. Just to inform people of what is spent by the choppers and sawyers to compete, many spend in upwards of $10,000 for equipment. That makes a couple hundred dollars spent on log rolling spikes and the occasional log seem pretty minimal. Not only does pushing for carpted logs threaten the integrity and well being of the sport, but also degrades the sport. Rolling on regular logs requires a greater amount of skill and athleticism than is required by carpeted logs. The goal of Lumberjack Water Sports is to make the sport bigger and better, not degrade sport. Some have been saying there is "overwhelming support" from the log rolling community to switch to carpeted logs. We can inform you that this is definitely NOT the case. We have spoken with many people within the sport, including many of the top competitors, and none of the had heard anything about moving to carpeted logs, nor had they voiced their opinion in favor of it. Lumberjack Water Sports does not support the move to carpeted professional logs, as it threatens the sport of log rolling's integrity and future. With a sport as diminishing as ours, the last thing we need is to put another nail the sport of log rolling's coffin.
